This idea will prevent your cookbooks from getting messy on your bench tops while cooking your favourite dishes. Using scrap pieces of MDF or ply, we make a simple cookbook stand.
1 Using a large cookbook as a guide, mark out the back of the stand, forming a rectangular shape. The stand will consist of this and two identical, triangular, side supports, all of which can be simply slotted together.
2 Measure in 100mm from each end and mark a couple of slots the same thickness as the MDF (or ply), making them about 30mm deep, measuring in from the edge.
3 Next, draw a couple of triangles. These will be the supports or legs of the stand. The back fits into corresponding slots cut into the triangles. The slope of the triangles should be at 30 degrees to the horizontal side, which rests flat on your bench top.
4 When you have finished marking out the pieces, cut them out using a jig-saw, and assemble.
5 To provide extra support (ie, to hold up a flimsy cooking magazine), glue and nail a length of 10mm square (section) timber between the legs, onto the front of the backing board. Give the stand a light sand and stain or oil as desired.
The stand can be easily pulled apart and stored out of the way in a drawer when not in use.
