Our House received a letter from Arthur Coulson of Ningi, Queensland, that contained his original plans for a "Tidy Timmy" (or "Tina"), dated 1947. Now 84, his clothes tidy "invention" teaches kids numbers and games, and keeps the parents happy with plenty of room for jackets, pants, jeans, shoes, socks and toys to be stored.
The stand consists of 3 rungs, with the bottom one used for trousers and / or skirts, the second rung for shirts, jumpers and pants and the top for socks and ties. The base of the stand can be used to hold shoes, slippers or toys. Jackets and cardigans can also be hung over the "head". The back of the head has a clock drawn on, teaching kids about numbers and time.
1 First, make the base box. Cut 2 lengths (70mm x 20mm pine) at 550mm, 3 lengths at 290mm. Glue and screw the base box together, onto the base, 550mm x 330mm of 18mm MDF or ply. See diagram 1.
2 One of the 290mm lengths forms the centre rail, which has a "pull-apart" slot cut in the centre to hold the stand. (A similar slot will be cut in the bottom of the tidy stand). See diagram 2. Use a tenon saw and carefully chisel out to cut the 2 slots. The 2 slots (to allow a firm but removable fit between the base centre rail and the stand) will each be 20mm wide and 35mm high. (The height of the centre rail is 70mm).
3 Cut out the triangular base and support post from the 18mm MDF or ply using a jigsaw. See diagram 3 for measurements. (The base and upright support is all one piece).
4 To make the head, draw a flat, "ET"-like shape on some scrap 5mm MDF or ply, and cut out. The "flat" head shape, allows a "beret" to be painted on, forming a perfect coat hanger shape.
5 Cut out a slot in the top of the triangular "tidy" to take the slotted (as before) joining piece, which is cut from scrap 18mm MDF (or ply). See diagram 4 for measurements. This joining piece allows a pull-apart tight fit between the "tidy" and the head. Note that the top slot on this joining piece (120mm long) is 5mm wide, (to attach to the head) while the bottom slot is 18mm wide (to attach to the triangular "body").
6 Slot the head into the joining piece to complete the "Tidy Timmy". Finish with a coat of paint, after first drawing a clock face on the back of the head. To help your children tell the time, movable hour and minute hands can be cut out from ply or thick card and pinned on.
