Many of us may not have the need of the space of a home office, but just somewhere to organise those important files and papers. Our House creates a filing cabinet within a blanket box to solve the problem of efficient document storage.

1
Measure the inside width of your blanket box and cut the four pine and aluminium angle strips to fit. (These angle strips are usually used for wall, floor or tile edging). Use the tenon saw to cut the wood and the hack saw to cut the aluminium. The four pieces of pine and aluminium strips will all need to be the same length. (Ours measure 42.5cm each).

2
Fix the pine strips at either end of the box with glue and screws. Pre-drill these from the inside to stop the pine splitting. Then pre-drill the holes in the aluminium lengths so they can be screwed into the pine.

3
Using file cradles, measure where the other two centre pine strips will need to be fixed. Apply glue to the end of the remaining pine lengths, fix into position and secure with screws.

4
Hem the edges of the fabric sling for a neat finish. Then use a staple gun to attach the fabric sling in between the centre pine strips. Staple from the underside of the turned over fabric so the staples are hidden.

5
Stack in the file cradles.

6
Now for the top. Spray the top of the lid as well as the base of the foam with the foam adhesive. Wait a minute and then stick the foam pad to the top of the lid. It should only take a few minutes to bond as the adhesive works very quickly.

7
Make sure when you cut the fabric that you allow a few extra centimetres around all of the edges. Any excess can be cut back later. Before attaching the fabric it’s a good idea to pre-iron it to get rid of any wrinkles. Spray the top of the foam with more glue. Blot off any excess, then stick on the fabric. Smooth out the fabric with your hands to get rid of any wrinkles.

8
Turn the fabric over under the edges. Then neaten with a few upholstery tacks and some craft glue at each corner and along the middle, to hold the fabric neatly in place. Alternatively you could use decorative trim along the edges. We used a creamy, sunny yellow fabric with large flowers on it. The box is white painted pine which has been slightly sanded to expose the pine in areas to give a popular “distressed” look.
