1
Clean the record with a cloth. Apply two coats of white gesso on one side only to prime the surface. Allow the gesso to dry.

2
Pencil in the spiral design starting from the centre and working your way out to the edge (see diagram). Mark 35 sections on the spiral as playing "squares". Paint the in-between areas of the spiral and the separating lines of the playing squares. We used blue to make it look like a water whirlpool. When the paint is dry, outline the playing squares and numbers with black marker.

3
Next, make the playing pieces (we made a beach ball, fish, starfish and lifebuoy). These will be made from the plaster cast in a chocolate/craft mould. Smear a little cooking oil or VaselineT into the mould so the pieces will come away easily when they're set.

4
Pour 1 cup of plaster and another 250ml of water into an old plastic container. Sprinkle in another 2« cups of plaster and stir with a spoon until the consistency is smooth and free of lumps (like thick cream). Try not to create too many air bubbles. Remember that plaster sets quickly, so don't take too long. Spoon the plaster into the moulds, being careful not to overfill them. A gentle tap on the table top should remove any trapped air bubbles and level out the plaster. Let this set for about 30 minutes, then turn the mould over, flex and tap it to release the plaster shapes. They should fall out easily.

Tip: When cleaning up, never wash plaster down the sink. Always use newspaper to wipe away any leftover plaster from equipment, then place the newspaper in the bin.

5
Give all your shapes a light sand around the edges. Paint the shapes in your desired colours and allow to dry. We used yellow, red and white. Glue the lifebuoy into the centre to make it a permanent feature of the board game. You could leave the lifebuoy freestanding so you can swap your shapes around and have a different game theme.

6
Apply a water-based sealer over the record's playing surface and the game pieces. This will give your game a longer life and help prevent any damage to the surfaces.
