The Mini Carver by Arbortech was created in Perth. It can be clamped onto the collar of most standard 100mm angle grinders. The manufacturers say it is ideal for carving just about all types of timber.
With the use of the mini carver tool, we watched as pieces of sheoak were transformed into a vase. (However this type of work requires practice).
1 First the shape of the vase was marked on the three blocks of timber and cut out with a jigsaw. The interior line of the vase was marked on each piece and the centre section cut out of one block only. This formed the middle of the vase. On the remaining two, the mini carver was used to scoop out another 5mm or so of the timber.
2 All the pieces were then glued and clamped together. Once the glue had dried, the shaping began with the corners.
3 After the basic form was carved out, the next job was to smooth away the tool marks with a mini sander. For this the vase was clamped back in a vice. Leaves were carved into the sides of the vase for added decoration and sanded again. The vase was polished with a clear furniture wax.

Cost The mini carver retails for about $95.
