We saw a rug put through the main machine, which has a series of paddles that remove any in-ground dirt.
Next, the rug is sprayed with detergent and spot-cleaned. It helps if you know what has caused each particular stain so it can be treated with the appropriate chemical.
The rug then travels through another machine to be washed and scrubbed to help remove stains and separate the pile. Cold water is used to avoid shrinkage and prevent the colour from running.
The next stage is to push the carpet through rollers that remove excess water, so the rug will be touch-dry. The process is repeated until all marks are gone.
Then the rug is rinsed and spun dry. After many turns in the dryer, the rug is hung out to air-dry for up to three days. The process is the same for rugs, carpets, dhurries and kilims.
Aubury Dickson from Carpet Cleaners also gave us a few tips on how to clean your rug at home. If you spill anything on a rug, mix 10 millilitres of white vinegar and 10ml of liquid dishwashing detergent with 500ml water. Sponge the mixture on the stain and rinse well. Aubury says this should get rid of most stains, but not all. The most important thing is to ensure you don't do any damage to the carpet.
