Our House looked at a kitchen with a few drawbacks. The exhaust fan needed replacing, the lighting was a bit ordinary and, despite a large window, the southerly aspect meant the room was a bit dull during the day. To solve all three problems, a Skytube Trio - a new product on the market - was installed.

First, the roof tiles were cut to install the Skytube. We've shown you on previous episodes of Our House how a Skytube is installed; however, this is a Skytube with a difference.

As well as providing natural light, this unit comes with a fan-forced ventilation system. An electric fan removes steam and cooking fumes to the outside of the house through flexible tubing. Depending on your situation, it can be vented to a roof outlet or - as in the case we looked at - under the eaves.

The advantage of this system is that there is no build-up of grease in the roof cavity, thus avoiding a fire hazard. And, because the fan is hidden in the ceiling, there is very little motor noise.

A competent handyperson could manage the installation, but you will need to get an electrician to wire in the fan.

The third feature of this Trio unit is the light. You can have the fan and light wired so that they come on together or separately. The installation took a couple of hours to complete. The system would also be ideal in a laundry or bathroom to extract steam and humidity.
