Scruba-Dub-Dog is the world's first coin operated dog wash. It started in Melbourne more than five years ago, and recently opened in Mona Vale, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. In fact, the popular Scruba-Dub-Dog is so successful, the team expect to open additional stores across Sydney during the next year, as well as interstate and possibly overseas.
Like most five-star beauty parlours, Scruba-Dub-Dog offers a wide variety of skin treatments. There's a seven cycle system, including a pre-wash, shampoo, rinse, flea rinse, vacuum, blow dry and deodoriser. And it all takes place in the comfort of his or her very own bathing bay.
There is a long wall of stainless steel bays in the Mona Vale centre, with automatic doors that slide into place and keep even the largest dog safely in place. Just like a coin operated car wash, owners can choose to operate the wash themselves, or ask one of the service staff to help.
To start the dog wash, coins are inserted and the required wash is chosen from the dial. Depending on the dog's needs, the owner can switch backwards and forwards between the cycles, spending more time on one and skipping others, if required.
The average cost of the dog wash is $10, but clients can spend as little or much as they please, depending on the cycles they want to use. No dog is too big or small for the wash, with one of the Mona Vale's regular clients weighing in at more than 70kg.
Scruba Dub Dog places priority on providing a hygienic facility, so fresh water is used in the wash bays. Also, the bays are disinfected after each use. The skin treatments are organic and the centre is in accordance with Environmental Protection Authority guidelines.
Scruba-Dub-Dog is not just a dog wash. There are a variety of services available on site, including professional clipping and grooming. Customers can also buy merchandise, choosing from a wide range of doggy toys, treats and care products. Scruba-Dub-Dog sell custom designed dog jackets and walking belts, as well as premium dog foods. They are also looking at expanding their services and will soon start a walking club for dogs and their owners. They also hope to host information sessions on dog care with specialist instructors.
The 7-cycle Dog Wash
- Pre Wash Soak: a rinse with warm water to dampen the dog and dislodge dirt.
- Shampoo: a herbal shampoo is massaged into the skin with warm water.
- After Shampoo Rinse: warm water rinses away the shampoo.
- Herbal (Pyrethrin) Based Flea Rinse: a warm flea rinse guaranteed to keep fleas at bay for at least seven days.
- Vacuum Dry: a vacuum to remove excess water and loose hair.
- Warm Blow Dry: hot air to completely dry the dog.
- Deodoriser: A doggy deodorant to keep your canine pal smelling sweet.
