Tara visits a furniture and homewares designer who has something unusual to offer. James Birchley, owner and designer of Dare Furniture specialises in wrought iron work with a different spin. With over 200 paint finishes, his style ranges from very ornate bronze and glass dining settings to contemporary silver finishes with bright pink upholstery.
James studied furniture technology and industrial design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and started his business four years ago. His designs are not based on any particular influences but rather a twist on traditional iron work. James calls it functional art, that is a culmination of custom creations in furniture, iron, glass and stone such as traditional marbles and granites.
He has seven people working for him at his workshop including boilermakers, welders and painters. Here, all the iron work is done then he outsources stonemasons, upholsterers and glaziers for table tops, shelving and slump pieces. While he was originally involved in much of the blacksmithing, he now limits himself to design and liasing with clients.
The products are either powdercoated or coated with a finish more resilient to humidity. The process involves a high pressured spray in a spray booth then a two-pack lacquer.
For the silver iron work finish, a black base is high pressure sprayed followed by the two-part resin which prevents scratching on the paintwork. The aged iron effect is hand painted up to three times with different applications of sponge or brush. Of the 200 paint effects to choose from, their most unique is the "Electrics range" which they've designed. There are around eight different bright and vibrant colours which give a neon type finish.
70% of their work is custom manufactured with the remainder sold off the floor. They like a customer to view the showroom then modify an item for their specific needs. The most popular items are the beds and chairs. Products range in price from $35 for a candle stick holder, $280 - $700 per chair, $600- $2500 for a table and $1000 - $2000 for beds. Custom made pieces can range up to thousands of dollars. Interstate deliveries are available.
