Teabags and an electric jug are fine for a quick cup of tea to kick start your day, but they won't please the tea enthusiast. Tea lovers like their hot cuppa brewed in the pot and if it's complete with a cosy, then all the better. Well, now you can make your morning cuppa a fun way to start the day with a teapot from Morpeth.
Morpeth is an historic village two hours north of Sydney. It is famous as the home of Arnott's, Brambles Transport, Soul Pattinson and Simms. And now the small town has a new claim to fame the Morpeth Australian Novelty Teapot Exhibition.
The first weird and wonderful teapot exhibition started six years ago in 1995 with just 53 teapots. At the time, the exhibition was a one off to attract new visitors to Morpeth village. But, it was so popular, the exhibition has now become an annual event.
Serious teapot collectors fly in to have first choice of the teapots available. All teapots are for sale and they are quickly snatched up by the crazy collectors, coming from all corners of the country, including Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and the Central Coast.
This year there were more than 2,500 teapots, making it Australia's largest teapot exhibition. For the past twelve months the teapots were collected and stored ready for the big event. Letters were sent to teapot makers around the nation giving them 10 months notice of the dates and theme for the exhibition. This year's theme was Sport and All Things Olympic.
A few favourites:- From Western Australia there was the Koala Yacht Challenge. This teapot featured two voluptuous women named Equestri-urn and Zebra Crossing. Standing beside them was their friend, Polly (put the kettle on).
- Also from Western Australia was an enormous beach volleyball babe in a size 18 swimming costume.
- From Queensland there were brightly coloured teapots with elongated trumpet spouts, sporting the colours of the Olympic rings.
- Victoria flew in TNT, Captivi-tea, Guil-tea and Split Personali-tea.
- And from New South Wales, crowds flocked to see the Olympic Torch Teapot.
- High tea is also popular, with exhibits from Royal Doulton, Royal Winron and Royal Worcester.
Of course, a teapot exhibition just wouldn't be the same without a nice cuppa. There are two teas to taste test at the show Ceylon tea in fruity flavours and a gourmet range of Iced tea infusions by Java Jive. This includes Java Jive's "Hangover Tea" with eight herbs and spices.
Australia has its very own silver pot called the Perfect Teapot. This pot brews the perfect cuppa and is world famous. The Perfect Teapot was made by the Silver Plate Company in Melbourne and exhibited at Morpeth.
Legend has it that the first novelty teapot was made by Josiah Wedgewood, who produced a vibrant green glaze. This inspired the Cabbage Teapot, which started a craze of fruit and vegetable shaped pots and other fanciful items.
