| How to choose the right wood plane for the job. |
1 The general rule for choosing the right plane for the job is: the longer the surface you have to plane, the longer the base of the plane to be used. A tri-plane is ideal for anything 1.5m or longer. If you use something smaller like a smoother plane, you will get a wavy effect. 2 For most jobs you would normally choose a jack plane or smoother plane. However, for fiddly jobs there are specialty planes available. For example, the spoke shave is ideal for those creative carving jobs. It comes with either a flat or curved base. There is also a very small plane that allows you to get into those smaller places.
3 When storing the plane, you should either lay the plane flat on its side or track the blade. Don't place the plane flat on the bench as this will blunt the blade.
