Not many people are aware that their ceilings could contain dangerous amounts of lead dust. This Sydney home proved to be just such an example, harbouring lead dust in its ceiling cavity. They owners called Ceiling Suckers, a Sydney-based company whose staff literally come in and suck the lead dust, old insulation and other nasties out of your roof.
Ceiling Suckers has been specialising in cleaning out ceilings since 1988 and has developed the unique CCS EnviroVac, a special vacuum cleaner with filters specifically designed to catch the most toxic dust.
This system also sucks up tile fragments, discarded wires, nails, leaves and so on. The Ceiling Suckers teams remove 60-100kg of dust from the average ceiling.
It is not advisable to hire an industrial-strength vacuum cleaner and attempt the job yourself. For a start, the filters will be unable to cope with the volume of dust, and there are also strict guidelines for its disposal. Also, it is much easier than you think to accidentally put a hole in the ceiling.
This is a relatively new service. Up until three years ago the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) was unaware of problems with lead dust in ceilings. If you are an allergy sufferer or live in a house that is more than 30 years old, this service is definitely worth looking into. Prices for this service vary according to the volume of dust removed and the accessibility of your roof cavity.
