A remote-controlled switch that allows you to operate almost any electrical appliance in the house. Simply plug the remote-control switch into a power point, then plug in the appliance. The remote control is battery-operated and has an indicator to show whether the appliance is on or off. It has a range of 15m and costs around $40.

There's also a light dimmer with a "soft switch". When you turn off the switch, the light slowly dims, giving you enough light to leave the room without tripping over furniture or other obstacles. When you switch the light on, the action is reversed. The device replaces a standard light switch or dimmer. Recommended retail price is $45.

A Moonglow night-light is good for those who are afraid of the dark. It uses no bulb, never heats up and is energy-efficient. The Moonglow gives off a fluorescent green glow and can be plugged into any ordinary power point. It costs around $12 to buy and around 20c a year to run, even if left on constantly.
