Hanging a door can be a difficult task. However, a new Australian invention called the Hinge-Setting Device has made the job much easier. The inventor, David Bakker, claims that you can save up to 60 percent in labour time by using the device. All you need is a small router or a laminate trimmer with a 6mm bit to do the job.

The device is basically a template. With power tools the base plates vary in size according to the manufacturer. To overcome this, the device has a formula that you must follow in order to obtain the correct set-up positions.

To set up the device, mark the leaf width of the hinge on a scrap piece of wood, then adjust the two outside clamps and lock into position. Place the Hinge-Setting Device on the doorjamb and tighten the centre clamp. Next, cut out the hinge rebate with a laminate trimmer. Loosen the centre clamp only and move on to the next hinge positions on the doorjamb. Fit the door into the jamb and mark the hinge position. Line up the device with the hinge markings and screw the hinges to the door.
