1 This new pool purifying system doesn't have the smell or feel of conventional salt or chlorine systems and is cheaper to operate. The Aquabrite Sanitiser is also beneficial to people with asthma or skin conditions.
2 It doesn't have the bleaching and sometimes corrosive effect on clothes, gardens or paving that are common with salt and chlorine systems.
3 Although a simple ionising system has been used since Roman times, this modern system uses an electric current passing between two electrodes to release soluble ions which kill bacteria and algae in the pool.
4 Previous ioniser pool systems took a long time to gain acceptance in Australia because of their bacteria kill rates and some surface staining. These problems have now been overcome with the use of Aquabrite, a powder catalyst additive which activates the copper and silver ions in the water.
5 The ioniser system has found uses in the Apollo space program and in pools used at the Atlanta Olympics.
6 In the house featured, the owners were advised by their architect, Katie Molnar, to install an ionising system to prevent the corrosion of the window and metal doorframes which are close to the pool.
7 The ioniser method of pool treatment is cost-effective, low-maintenance, non-toxic, easy to install, has no daily chemical additions and reduces skin and eye irritation. The backwash can also be used to water the garden as it will not damage plants. Another big plus is that there is no need to shower afterwards. This method is unaffected by sunlight and heat and so is perfect for spas and solar heated pools.
8 The ioniser can replace any current system, but it can take a while for the water to adjust to the new conditions. It's best to drain saltwater pools first but chlorine can adapt to the new system quite easily. |
Cost Ioniser (standard pool): $780
Ioniser (installed): $834
Aquabrite additive: $140 per year
(chlorine costs about three times more)
