Devimat is a new, super-thin underfloor heating system that can be installed on just about any clean solid floor, including floorboards and old tiles. It can therefore be installed over your old floor, and because it's so thin it won't greatly alter the floor height. It comes in 10 roll sizes, so there should be a size to fit most rooms.
Here Devimat was being installed on the concrete floor of an unfinished laundry area. The first step was to lay the heating mat. Where necessary the mat was cut to fit around fixtures like drains, cupboards and toilets (the actual cable is not cut — only the surrounding mesh-like material).
When the mat sections were in place they were glued to the floor base. Before the new flooring was laid a tile adhesive was spread over the Devimat. The adhesive used was rubber based to help protect the heating mat. The tiles were then laid over the adhesive and grouted. Finally, an electrician wired the Devimat up to the thermostat.
This system only takes about 30 minutes to heat up the floor, so you don't have to have it running all day. The average bathroom or laundry will cost about $550 to install and you can expect running costs to be about 10 cents an hour.
