1
The owners of this house have an ideal location: the house is perched on the top of a hill and is surrounded by bush. The only drawback is that to get there, you have to climb up 120 steps.

2
After countless trips up and down the hill, the owners decided to install a hillside lift to run from the street up to the house. The first stage of construction was to clear a path along the route of the lift. As the track had to be at least 1100mm away from any obstructions, some trees had to be cut down and rocks removed.

3
The lift operates by running along a rail supported by piers. Holes had to be dug 4m apart along the entire length of the lift. Next, steel footings had to be concreted into the holes for strength. The piers were then bolted to the footings. Eventually the rails will be placed on top of the piers.

4
An electric winch helped get the heavy rails up the slope. Once the first rail was in position, it served as a guide for the others. When the rails were all in position, they were bolted together with plates. A notched running track was then welded and bolted to the underside of the rails.

5
An electrician then connected three-phase power to operate the lift. Finally, landings and handrails were constructed at the top and bottom of the hill.

6
The incline lift can carry four people or 275kg, and has a magnetic braking system.

7
A lift such as this must be inspected regularly. You need to check with your local council as to their regulations.
