Making presents at home has never been more fun than with the cordless Dremel. Add a personal touch to a glass, mirror, timber picture frame or a terracotta pot by engraving, carving or etching. All you need is a bit of imagination.

The Dremel is a hand-held, battery powered rotary tool that you can use for decorating surfaces or as a tool in the workshop. It has many accessories that can be bought in varying kit forms for specific uses, such as sets for Cleaning/Polishing, Cutting/Carving, and Sanding/Grinding.

Some general guidelines from Bosch for working with the Dremel:
  • Wear eye, mouth and ear protection.
  • Always practice on a piece of scrap material first to choose the right accessory and determine the correct work speed.
  • Do not apply too much pressure, let the tool do the work for you.
  • Keep the Dremel and accessories clean.
  • Holding and guiding the tool — pencil grip for precision work (engraving), hand grip for rough work (grinding).

    STEP BY STEP
    Glasses
1 Sketch your design onto a small piece of white paper that will fit inside your glass.

2 Place the sketch into the glass and position it. Hold it in place with some clear tape.

3 When you have selected the right accessory for this etching job, trace over your design, leaving a neat little picture on the glass.

NB: If you are etching on a bottle, try freehand or a non-permanent marker to draw the design first.

    Terracotta Pots

1 Sketch design onto the surface using a white chinagraph pencil.

2 Test selected accessory on spare material to make sure it will create the right effect.

    3 Etch the design.

4 To create an aged effect on your finished design, paint some white acrylic paint over the pot and design. Using a damp cloth, wipe the paint away immediately. The paint should remain in the etched grooves, leaving an old limed effect.
