By law, glass in the home must comply with current Australian Standard Guidelines. Ordinary annealed glass installed before the introduction of standards is a serious accident waiting to happen. If there is an accident, the glass breaks into large dangerous shards. Safety glass will only crumble. But complying doesn't always mean replacing; you can use safety film over existing glass.
Safety Film is a cheap, yet efficient alternative to replacing all the glass in the home with safety glass. It is a clear, thin sheet of polyester laminate, which only needs to be applied to one side of a glass panel. It will not only strengthen the glass, in the event of a breakage it will hold the glass fragments together.
The film is scratch resistant, easy to clean and will withstand a fair amount of family wear and tear. It is possible to install safety film on your own but it is a thick and strong adhesive so it can be tricky and is best left up to professionals.

Total Cost The cost of applying Safety Film to one side of two glass panels was $195; less than half the cost of quoted replacement. Australian standards require that only one side be treated.
