As practical as they are, most people would agree that garbage bins are an unattractive addition to the garden - until now. Our House checks out the latest in garden design - wheelie bin covers. From ivy to conifer hedges, fields of flowers or rose designs, the special stick-on coverings allow the bin to match or blend in with your garden.
Four (one for each side) self-adhesive vinyl sheets with a garden theme are stuck onto the bin to camouflage it. The covers come with instructions and a squeegee so that you can place the sheets on the bins and spread them on without any bumps or air-bubbles getting through.
Comprehensive instructions come with the cover kit. Here is a summary:
1 First wash both your hands and the bin with soapy water to get rid of any residue oils and grime.
2 After trimming the edges, apply each sheet, smoothing it over as you go with the squeegee supplied. Because of the soapy water there's plenty of time for adjustments. A cut out section is removed to allow for the bin's wheels.
3 One sheet is then stuck on for each of the bin's four sides.
There are over twelve designs available. These include a conifer hedge, ivy, roses, cottage garden and daisies. The most popular design seems to be the roses. Beautiful Bins, the distributors of the wheelie bin covers in Australia, have had no problem gaining approval from councils in different states. They say the councils allow the covers as they are a vast improvement on the look of the standard bins. It's recommended however, that you check with your local council first before purchasing a wheelie bin cover.
The covers have been produced using a high-quality vinyl which, when applied properly, is washable, durable and most importantly weather-resistant. According to the manufacturers they are also not damaged by the "claw" mechanism used in some collection machinery.

Cost $39.99 per cover, (fits 240litre bins) which incudes four sheets, detailed instructions and a squeegee sponge. There is a $10 charge for postage and for $5 extra, Beautiful Bins can also make a sticker of your house number.
