Our House looks at five new gizmos which use the latest in miniaturised technology.
1 It seems that mobiles are getting smaller and smaller. It's hard to imagine that they could get any smaller than the compact Motorola V3688 flip phone, measuring only 82mm x 43mm x 26mm, which some say is one of the leading communication tools for the next millennium. The total cost of the phone depends on which type of plan you sign up with.
2 Micro radios are ultra compact, clip-on digital FM radios with auto scan tuning and are available in a variety of colours (eg. purple, electric blue, green, pink). They are perfect for home, work or travel. RRP $29.95 - $34.95, battery included.
3 It appears that the family photo on your desk will soon be looking outdated. The Digital Photo Frame is a gadget that displays a dozen or more digital photos or movie clips of family or friends. You can choose whichever picture strikes your fancy or have the frame cycle through a collection in a high-tech desktop slide show. The 5.5 inch Digital Photo Frame is built around a brilliant active-matrix liquid-crystal display. Images are first taken with a digital camera, then they are stored on a memory stick - about the size of stick of chewing gum - which then slides into the back of the frame. You can chose to either display one photo or video clip or show them in sequence. Not cheap, however, with a price tag of RRP: $2,149.
4 The Beo Talk 1100 is a new digital telephone answering machine. It features in addition to the usual functions, the ability to identify the incoming calls and to handle them differently, answering with different messages to different callers, using a caller ID function. Beo Talk 1100 can sort your calls into four different groups. It can provide three different messages and even keeps a record of the last fifty incoming calls – very handy for small business use. RRP $395.
5 The Bio Electric Shield may just look like an attractive piece of jewellery, but the manufacturers claim it protects from electromagnetic radiation emitted by items such as computers, mobiles, microwaves and other electric gadgets around the home. Electromagnetic radiation is said to cause stress, fatigue and muscle tightness. The Bio-Electric Shield is made up of precision cut quartz crystals to deflect these harmful energies. You can wear it as a pendant on either the inside or the outside of clothing or it can be carried in a closed pocket.
Wearers include Hollywood star Steven Seagal, Hillary Clinton, British Prime Minister's wife Cherie Blair and Comedian Bill Cosby. About 27,000 shields have been sold world wide so far. There are four different shields in the range; the brushed sterling silver for $349, the mirror finish sterling silver for $399, the mirror finish sterling silver with 14k gold accents for $529 or the all gold 14k shield - the most powerful product on offer - at $1,600. All RRP.
