To the uninitiated, it's just another shopfront on Sydney's busy Pittwater Road. Inside, it's festooned with tennis raquets, golf clubs, pots and pans, as well as stacks of books and racks of plates and knick knacks. Brookvale Bazaar is a second hand store, recently taken over by John Evans. From the bustling street, you enter a collector's dream. Buried deep among old sports gear, kitchen appliances and dusty books are some real treasures. Until now, the shop has been a haven for artists, sculptors, collectors and even prop buyers from Fox Studios. But there are useful things for the regular shopper.
John is an avid collector but his passion is golf memorabilia. The former golf pro and course designer maintains a special section of the store just for fellow golfers. Buy a new club or some colourful tees and get free advice on improving your swing while you're there. Literally hundreds of golf books line the walls of John's office, ranging from how to grow grass on the green to some great golf jokes.
There are thousands of old records (45s and 78s) so you're bound to find your favourite single — the one you danced to when you were a teenager. A recent shopper bought a Harry Belfonte record featuring Bob Dylan playing the harmonica. He had been searching for this album for more than 22 years.
When you find that old favourite, you may need to buy a new turntable. Brookvale Bazaar has a wide range of record players to choose from. If you have a turntable but there are a few missing bits and pieces, you're sure to find what you need in stock. Old parts like these are no longer manufactured and can be hard to come by. If it's not on the shelf just ask John and he will try to source it.
If it's exercise equipment you want there's no need to spend a small fortune at a specialist store. John is amazed by the number of people who sell their exercise gear after owning it for just a short time. You'll find everything you need for the home gym — from treadmill and bike to a small trampoline.
The shelves are heavy with Kenwood Chef mixers, old Bakelite kettles, toasters, coffee makers and irons. Brookvale Bazaar stocks just about any electrical appliance you may need. John also stocks spare parts for the older makes. An replacement element or power cable can give life to even the oldest of appliances.
Bookworms will love Brookvale Bazaar. John stocks everything from novels full of passion and suspense to family classics. There is also a backlog of magazines and comics.
But wait there's more: car engines and lots of spare parts, beer taps, posters, videos, copper coins and a range of work tools. Brookvale Bazaar stocks just about anything you can imagine. There's even an ornate brass telephone with a picture of the Mona Lisa on the dial pad.
