If your home is clad with fibro or cement sheeting and it's time for a facelift, Weathertex weatherboard is a light-weight alternative to pre-finished cladding products and brick veneer. It's relatively cheap and easy to install.
The owners of this fibro home were keen to upgrade so they jumped at the opportunity for a Weathertex makeover. The house and garage will be clad with the specialist weatherboard, giving their home a whole new look.
The owners' only other option was to build in brick veneer. This is a much bigger job and would cost a lot more. Pre-finished cladding products made from PVC, vinyl or aluminium could be used but they require painting every 10 years and the overall look isn't nearly as polished.
The family wanted to retain the style of their house and keep the timber window frames. This is also Weathertex's preferred approach so building begins.
It will take about two weeks to clad this one-storey, three bedroom home. We're working with qualified tradespeople but you can choose to install Weathertex weatherboards yourself. To help the home handyman, Weathertex have developed a detailed installation guide.
After the weatherboards are installed, the house will be painted with a Dulux Weather-shield low sheen exterior paint, in a colour chosen by the owners.
The Weathertex factory in Raymond Terrace has been manufacturing specialist weatherboard planks for more than 30 years. The boards are made from real timber (selected Australian hardwoods) but all the imperfections are ironed out, leaving the finished product free of knots, splits, cracks and cranky grain.
Weathertex is cost-effective as the builder (or DIY handyman) can order the exact amount required for the home. It is sold by the square metre. An added bonus is that Weathertex weatherboards don't appeal to termites or borers. This is because most of the sugars and starches have been removed from the wood during the manufacturing process.
There are many different types of Weathertex available. Our home was done in "Federation Primelok" smooth. Primelok is a plastic ridge fixed along the back of each weatherboard and allowing it to rest on the one beneath it while fixing. This reduces installation time and cuts a two man job down to one.
Weathertex gives a 25 year guarantee not to rot, split or crack (when installed as instructed in the Weathertex Installation Manual).
