Looking at the houses in your neighbourhood, it is obvious there are a wide variety of bricks on the market. So when the time comes to extend your home, matching the bricks can be difficult and expensive. Now there's a technique which makes matching colours easy so you can make new bricks appear old or give your home a whole new look.

Nawkaw Australia is a franchise of Nawkaw Corporation International which has 13 offices in Australia, Canada, Russia and the United States. The company manufactures and installs masonry stains into existing buildings, permanently changing the colour of bricks and mortar.

Nawkaw offers four market services — repairs, renovations and additions, restorations and decorative colour changes. There is a 25 year limited warranty of their work and product.

The colour matching process is done in several stages and there is a wide range of colours to choose from. First, the mortar is stained by hand using brushes. The bricks are given the same treatment using air brushes, sponges or rollers. It's a layering process that Nawkaw considers to be an art form.

Detailing depends on the style of the brick. The colourists may be required to add small black marks or mottled colouring to individual bricks to ensure they match perfectly. The time it takes to do a job depends on the number of bricks involved and the style of the brick. The stain is permanent, quickly seeping through the brick's pores. It is also mould, mildew and weather proof, UV resistant and quick drying.

The Nawkaw team usually work on home extensions where the original bricks are unavailable due to the property's age or the type of brick used. A brick of the same size is used to complete the extensions and then they are recoloured to match the existing home. They often work on homes in large building estates where the houses go up quickly and the right bricks aren't available at the time.

The cost is usually determined by the job. The texture of the brick that requires colouring, whether or not the mortar colour requires adjusting, whether the mortar joint is flush, ironed or raked and the number of bricks requiring treatment all influence the final cost. The larger the job the lower the unit cost.

Total Cost
To give you a general idea of the costs involved:
  • A small extension of 2000 bricks ranges from $1650 to $3650 with an average cost around $2400 ($57 sq metre)
  • A medium extension of 4000 bricks ranges from $2450 to $5500 with an average cost around $3700 ($44 sq metre)
  • A large extension of 8000 bricks ranges from $3250 to $6800 with an average cost around $5300 ($32 sq metre)
  • A whole house recolour of a 5000 red textured brick home ranges from $2500 to $6000 with the average cost around $3800 ($30 sq metre) depending on the colour scheme. Aging bricks with the colouring technique is a complex process so prices vary. Nawkaw provide accent and quoining on appropriate bricks to give the desired appearance. The best way to keep prices down when extension matching is to select the best brick prior to construction with colour treatment and to take the time to match the mortar.
