Our House visits the factory of renowned white-goods manufacturer Fisher & Paykel, in Auckland, New Zealand. Washing machines, in line with all other white goods, have gone through some amazing changes over the years. Double-drawer dishwashers and "smart" fridges are already here. Fisher & Paykel's smart drive washing machine joins the range.
Designs that have been spun out in the past include wringers, front and top loaders, with the twin tub in between. The Fisher & Paykel factory hosts a 2,500 worker production line, making some 900 washing machines per day (one every 24 seconds). In the "cold" department, they can make up to 1,000 fridges per day.
The manufacturing process begins with the raw materials, consisting mainly of sheet metal and plastic. The components are then assembled, including the electronics and motors, before the items are packaged. Random testing is overseen by a Production Evaluation Manager, who checks the quality of the washing process. Statistically, it is no surprise to find that over a period of 10 years, some 50 tonnes have been "tested" in this procedure.
The Fisher & Paykel Intuitive is part of their recent Quantum product launch. The machine, while simple and efficient to use, contains more computer "brain power" than the Apollo 3 spaceship. With its 42,000 wash cycle variations, it makes automatic sensing and washing of laundry a breeze. Definitely the "cleverest" machine around.
