The walls of your home eventually succumb to the effects of time and weather. It can prove costly if cracks and joints are not repaired as weak and missing mortar can lead to dampness, rusting wall ties and bowed brickwork. The traditional method of re-pointing (the removal of old mortar and refilling with new mortar) is carried out by hand-usually using a plugging chisel to rack out old mortar and then refilling the mortar with a pointing trowel.
However, Quikpoint, inventors of Australia's first mechanised re-pointing system, claim to do the job in a lot less time and without much of the mess.
Benefits of the Quikpoint system
1 Quikpoint claim that their system is approximately 5 times faster than re-pointing by hand.
2 The work is carried out with minimal dust or mess.
The Quikpoint System
1 The old mortar is removed with a diamond router which is attached to a portable vacuum cleaner. This tool removes the mortar to a specified depth of up to 25-30mm, while keeping the dust under control. The joints are raked to the exact same depth so that the job is done thoroughly.
2 The walls are then hosed down to clean them. This allows the new mortar to stick to the brickwork and to remove any loose particles.
3 New mortar is injected into the empty joints with a mechanised mortar gun. This injects mortar to completely fill the joint. The mortar can then be hand finished to any of the common flush or tooled joint styles.
4 The mortar is left to dry for about 2 days, before giving the brickwork a final clean with acid solution and high pressure water.
