We take a look at some new and innovative kitchen products.
Mini Grater
This tiny grater looks more like a novelty gift than a useful kitchen item, but it is very useful for grating ginger, garlic and herbs. It retails for $3.95 and is available from CPS Homewares.
Garlic Crushers
A Hoffritz stainless steel crusher provides a good basic garlic crushing action. It retails for $16.95, and comes with its own separate garlic skin cleaner head attachment.
An OXO Good Grips crusher contains a self-cleaning head (attached to the crusher). You simply squeeze the two sides together and the head pushes the garlic skin through to the other side, rather than messing up the holes. This retails for $22.95.
Apple corer
This is an efficient, smooth, stainless steel design and is available from Basic Essentials for $44.
Pot holders
These pot holders are a great replacement for your worn oven gloves and are from European design team Eva Solo. They are made from silicone, which stays in shape, does not melt and is even resistant to detergents and bacteria. Simply rinse them in running water or place in the dishwasher after use. They retail for $48 for a set of two, and are available from Basic Essentials, Sydney.
Cheese slicer
This slicer's design works quite simply to ensure that each piece of cheese is the same size. You can adjust the slicer to various cheese widths. It is available from Basic Essentials for $74.
Alessi jars
These designer jugs measure liquids, flour, sugar, etc, and comes with a built-in mixing lid. These jars retail at $95 each and are available from Ventura Design, Sydney.
Thor Compact Dishwasher
The Thor Compact Dishwasher measures 50cm by 50cm by 50cm. It weighs around 21kg and is easy relocated. It can handle a full 6 place dinner setting, as well as 40 glasses or 30 large dinner plates. It's suitable for use in a studio apartment, holiday home, or even a boat and takes just 15 minutes to wash a full load when connected to hot water. The retail price is $695.
Fridge, (walk in corner pantry)
The walk-in corner pantry fridge is a new concept which has only just been recently available in Australia. The unit is fully integrated and has a 1,450 litre capacity. A panelled door of any material or colour can be added to match your kitchen.
Only one square metre of unused space is needed to install this walk in fridge. It is supplied with 5 tiers of shelves that are pantry sized in order to accommodate large platters, crates, etc, together with 6 shelves located on the door. It doesn't however, include a freezer. The price of the unit is around $7,500.
