Even pet lovers admit certain animals and insects can be annoying at times. Our House shows you how to repel, but not kill or harm, those annoying creatures around your home.
Copper Wire
To keep slugs from snacking on your plants, wrap a length of copper wire around your terracotta pot. When slugs come into contact with the copper, it gives them a small electric shock, and they’ll turn back. Cut a piece slightly longer than the pot’s circumference, wrap it around the pot, and twist the wire ends together with needle-nose pliers. It’s important that the plant’s leaves don’t come into contact with the ground or the slugs will use them to attack the rest of the plant.
Possum Go
Quassia chips are known to protect your plants from possums. It’s a natural product from the Quassia tree, a native of the Carribbean. Its natural bitter taste deters possums and chewing insects. To use, add 30g of chips to a saucepan filled with one litre of water. Simmer for 30 mins. Add soap flakes (these encourage the solution to stick to the plant) and allow to cool. Sieve the contents, then place in a spray container and seal. You will need to re-apply the brew to the plant's leaves about once a week or after rain.
Maxi Match
These huge “matches” are soaked in citronella, which when lit, repels mosquitoes. To use, place the pin in the torch, stick it in the ground and light the wick. You can also place the matches in pots filled with sand. The matches will keep burning for 3-4 hours. They are self-extinguishing at 5cm height but use sand to extinguish the flame if needed. Do not use in strong winds or near inflammable products.
