| Painting Cutlery |
| Don't overlook the potential of cutlery. Rather than serving up the same old silver, or in our case stainless steel, spice it up using a bit of imagination and a splash of paint. |

1 First up, give the cutlery a wash with soapy water to remove any dust.
2 Now it's ready for painting. You'll need a water-based non-toxic paint called Porcelaine 150 which goes straight onto the metal and gets baked in the oven to form a hard, shiny surface.
3 As for the design, you can really do anything that takes your fancy. We showed you a couple of options starting with a simple geometric pattern on the handle. Here's how we did it. Use an outliner to divide up the area. This can be applied straight from the tube and is good for those finer details. Then use a brush to fill in the shapes with different colours. Remember with the primary colours of red, yellow and blue, additional colours such as orange, green and purple can be created. Then it's just a matter of repeating the pattern on the rest of the set.
4 Another design we created was a marble effect using just two colours. To do this, first brush a thick coat of base colour onto the handle. Then add a few drops of white and gently swirl the colour around with the tip of the brush.
5 The paint has to be left to dry for a good 48 hours before the cutlery can be placed in the oven (do not pre-heat the oven). Then turn the temperature up to 150ΓΈ Celsius and bake. Leave the cutlery to cool in the oven before removing. Once the paint has properly set, you shouldn't be able to scratch the surface.
|
Cost The cost to decorate the first set of cutlery was $32 which included $8 for each of the three colours plus $8 for the outliner.
The marble-look cutlery, using only two colours, cost $16.
The paint can also be used on crockery, glass and terracotta.
