1 To prevent fraying, secure the ends of the rope with sticky tape.
2 Thread the twine through the needle and tie a knot in the end. We used double thickness for extra strength. Put on the cotton gardening gloves. Push the needle through the end of the rope. Wrap the twine around each new coil as you build up the basket. Continue to secure the coil at about 5cm intervals, pulling the needle through with pliers when necessary. This part is quite fiddly, but it will get easier as you go.
3 Once you have the base completed, take a bowl and turn it upside down. Wrap the rope around the base to start the basket shape. Keep wrapping the rope around, pulling tightly as you go. Then remove the bowl, turn your basket over and continue to coil.
4 When you get to the top, make your stitches a bit closer together to create a decorative edge. You can hide the cut end of the rope with some dried flowers, shells or red chillies. We fixed some chillies to our basket with thin wire.
