Our House showed us how to etch the surface of an old Chianti bottle and some cheap glasses to create a great looking drinks set.
Etched glass items make terrific gifts and you don't have to send them away to be acid-washed or sand-blasted. You can get a wonderful effect at home quite simply with a product called Etchall.
First, draw a pattern onto the glass surface. Keep the pattern simple or you'll lose the definition. Next, use resist gel to colour in the design. This protects the area you don't want etched, so make sure you fill it in completely. Let the gel dry until clear. This should take about an hour.
The Etchall itself isn't acid-based. The active ingredient is a chemical called ammonium bi-fluoride, which reacts with the components of glass, leaving a frosted finish. As with any chemical, due care should be taken, so wear rubber gloves.
Using the applicator card, apply the Etchall onto the surface of the bottle. The coating should be thick and even. It's a challenge, but try not to scrape the bottle with the card or you could be left with unwanted marks. Leave the Etchall on for 30 minutes, then scrape it back into the bottle to be reused. Rinse away the residue and the resist gel in cold water.
