We visited a toddler's room that was very bland. With grey carpet, grey walls and grey verticals, it wasn't much inspiration for a young child. As the house was rented, all changes needed to be temporary and fully transportable.

We started with a lovable Winnie the Pooh theme. Tee Zed Products distributes a wide range of easy-to-use Pooh products, available through Target stores, including lots of stick-on decorations. The beauty of the stickers is that they can be removed. We put most of the stickers along the walls, close to the eye level of the small occupant. If you want to stimulate a toddler with bright colours and shapes, these objetcs need to be within immediate view. Anything too high up simply won't get noticed.

The existing black bookshelf in the room was a bit sophisticated. A simple solution was to paint over it. You can paint over some laminated finishes as long as you prime them first with something like ESP. Two coats of an acrylic-based paint were used to cover the black. We used Matisse products because they have a special medium called impasto. This gets mixed with standard acrylic paint to give a raised 3D effect - ideal for defining shapes.

We roughly copied shapes from our decorative border on the wall and cut them into a simple stencil. We used the same paint mixed in with a fabric medium to cover a length of muslin. Once this dried, we draped the muslin over the window frame with stick-on hooks. This is the advantage of choosing a super-lightweight material.

A Honey Bear Kit, containing a jar, not of honey but of liquid plastic, added to the theme. All you need to do is melt the liquid plastic in the microwave or on the stove and then spoon it over the bear.

The final touch to cover up the grey floor was a rug. We made one from canvas, which we hand painted and machined with different materials. Texture is also important to young kids, and the rug we made will give them plenty of new things to discover.
