| Discover how to make a snugly fitting ironing board cover. |

Start by making a template of your board. Lay a length of vilene (light-weight, see through fabric that doesn't rip and is perfect for making templates) on the floor. You could also use tracing paper. Turn your ironing board upside down and trace around the outside edge. Cut out this shape to give the template.
Lay this template over the 6mm foam and cut to size using fabric scissors. This is now the underlay for your ironing board cover.
We chose calico to cover the foam base because it's a thick material and relatively inexpensive. When cutting, allow extra for the thickness of the foam and the depth of the board, plus some seam allowances.
To give your cover some life, add a decorative border. We made ours 8 cm wide and also cut an extra 50cm strip as a decorative top piece. Cut these on the bias (diagonally across the weave) so that they'll fit snugly around the curves. Fold the material in a triangle. To save time, fold it again in half, making sure the edges meet. Measure and then cut through all thicknesses, making enough strips to go around the length of the border.
Attach the contrasting piece of decorative fabric to the cover and join the border strips together to make one continuous length, remembering to join them on the bias. This will become the casing for the drawstring. Thread the drawstring through the border, fit the cover over your ironing board and then tighten the drawstring to secure.
