Three years ago Tracey Keller abandoned a corporate career to follow her dream to paint full time. A goal she'd set herself a few years earlier was simply to "make people smile". She paints quirky and fun animals and is particularly known for her pet portraits. Tara meets Tracey at Salmon Galleries, Milsons Point, to see some of her work on display and another in progress.
"Prior to this, my career background was that of fashion, retail and marketing, I had a big job, a staff of 30 and was very happy. However, I had an idea and a dream, so I combined that with my passion and excitement, and feel so lucky to be doing something I love!" Based in Brisbane, Tracey has had numerous exhibitions in Brisbane, Noosa, and the Gold Coast, and has just completed a successful solo exhibition at Salmon Galleries, Sydney.
Her larger-than-life animals reveal Tracey's sense of humour, inviting us to smile along with her. And, in contrast to the quirky stuff, her abstracts feature different tones, textures and values, yet still manage to convey Tracey's positivity. These canvases are contemporary explorations of texture and colour, from chalky taupes to vibrant turquoise and gold.
Commissioned portraits range from $640 - $3,000 and the process involves Tracey getting to know the owner and the pet to try and convey as much personality through the painting as possible. It's a casual meeting and Tracey finds out all about her subject and helps chose a backdrop and pose for the portrait. Quirky animal painting range from $450 - $3,000 and feature flying pigs, polar bears and other unusual larger than life animals.
