Triloka Designs exclusively hand-paints and hand-crafts decorative borders, feature tiles and accessories to create a unique and personal style in a bathroom or kitchen. Today, Rebecca visits the Triloka Design workshop and sees the artists at work.
Penny Neech, together with Nick, Sandra and Erica are the four artists behind Triloka Designs. The company started three years ago and creates and manufactures the artists' designs and individual tile concepts. The name "Triloka" is hindu for hell, earth and heaven or fire, earth and air which are all the elements required in ceramics.
Indigo Tile Designs stocks the majority of Triloka's pieces. David Westaway from Indigo informs Triloka about market trends and special requests from clients. Indigo's product range includes exclusive wall and floor tiles from Italy, Spain and Mexico. The company also provides a design consultancy to ensure a continuity of style from the tiles in the kitchen and bathroom continues through the rest of the house.
Triloka Designs has fulfilled some unusual requests from clients including painting a Barrier Reef underwater scene in an entire bathroom, and hand-painting tiles with gold specially created for a scene in the film Mission Impossible 2. Generally, Triloka can make up a specific tile colour and/or design to match a client's bathroom/kitchen theme.
Hand painted panels are also a special feature of Triloka. The panels are for clients who want a personal touch to bathrooms/kitchens or outdoor courtyards and have featured hand painted pictures of animals, flowers, borders to highlight water views and french windows overlooking a garden scene to name a few. Panels have also been made for street numbers of houses.
Rebecca sees Triloka's work in action at a seventies bathroom overhaul. The owners removed wood paneling from the walls hoping it would be an improvement, however what lay beneath was lime green walls. The transformation from the existing brown and white tiles on the floor and walls to specialty hand crafted and colour-selected tiles brings new life to the room.
