Sally and Stu's sofa is tired and worn and detracts from the living room's style so they want to update it. But instead of buying a new one, they are looking to save money and get a fresh look with upholstering by specialist Greg Barnes.

The suite is eight years old and was bought for $3000. The two and a half seater couch and two chairs are faded and discoloured with some tears in the fabric but the structure is in good condition. The new material will be Amish Natural, to go with the red and natural check already prevalent in the room.

Greg will pick up the suite and transfer it to his business Barnes Upholstery in Pymble to get the recovering under way. Once back in the workshop, Greg will remove the covers and line the suite with polyester padding to restore the shape of the cushions. After checking the condition of the seat webbing, he will measure and cut the fabric before recovering each piece.

When it comes to choosing the right fabric, the task is complicated by the wide range available and the most expensive may not necessarily last the longest. Synthetics and blends are generally cheaper, easier to keep clean and wear better. But if you favour natural fabrics, then the thicker the fabric and the tighter the weave, the more durable it's likely to be.

Cost
To cut, sew and cover suite in fabric:

Fabric
27.5 metres was required to re-cover suite ie: two arm chairs and two and half seater sofa
cream coloured poly/cotton blend from Lincraft was chosen by the owners @ $26.99 per metre
Total cost of fabric: $742.20

Total Cost
So it's a new beginning for an old member of the family. The total cost, including the fabric, was just over two thousand three hundred dollars. The owners agree that's at least 25% cheaper than buying a new suite.
