If you're after a christening gift with a difference, or just something special for the kids, you can't go past this personalised project. There's a lot of children's furniture on the market, but it's not always fun. Well, with a little creativity, some paint and stain, you can add a personal touch to that plain kids' furniture.

Step By Step
1
First, apply Jo Sonja's Woodstain Gel to the furniture, leaving the seats, rails and tabletop bare. The gel is best brushed on in the same direction as the grain, and the excess wiped off with a lint-free cloth.
2
Coat the remainder of the raw pine with an acrylic-based paint. We used Skin Tone, except for the edges which were painted red.
3
Give the tabletop a striped border, using masking tape to keep the lines straight and crisp.
4
It's now time to put your creativity to the test. Paint on letters of the alphabet and fun designs to give the table and chair set a fun new look. You can transfer your own designs onto the furniture, or use our patterns as inspiration.
5
For a personal touch, add the names of the young owners of the furniture to the back of the chairs.
6
If you want clean, bright colours, a coat of clear vanish is the perfect finish. Tara chose an old fashioned look for this project, applying an antique finish before the varnish.
7
Spatter acrylic Brown Earth onto the furniture, using a toothbrush. When dry, rub Burnt Umber oil paint mixed with an antiquing medium over the project. The medium thins the paint into a light wash and gives the new table and chairs a vintage look.
