Shop-bought wrapping paper can be expensive. As a cheap alternative, Our House shows you how to make your own in a few minutes.
This type of wrapping paper is simple and fun to make, and you can produce up to 20 sheets of paper from the bought materials.
1 Lay a sheet / tablecloth on an ironing board. Switch the iron to a very hot setting (no steam).
2 On top of the cloth, lay out a one metre strip of waxed paper with the waxed (shiny) side upwards. Make sure that there is enough cloth for the length of paper.
3 On the first 50cm of paper, lay out whatever filling you choose in the desired pattern. You can use dried leaves or flower petals, collected from your garden. Spread them out evenly.
4 Fold the remaining 50cm of paper over the pattern so that all the edges meet neatly. Secure in a few places with clips.
5 When the paper has been secured, lay the remaining sheet / tablecloth over the whole of the paper and the “filling” of your choice.
6 Iron the cloth over the area that is covering the paper. When most of the edges are ironed remove the clips and iron over these spots. Continue ironing until you are satisfied that all the edges are sealed. The wax coating melts, joining the two pieces of paper together.
7 To achieve different effects, wrap presents in coloured paper first, then wrap with your wax paper design. Also, try out some of the other “filling” examples under the materials list.
