Most parents would agree that any idea that encourages small kids to put their stuff away is definitely worth a try. Canvas "pockets" designed for holding pairs of shoes are also useful for storing kids' toys and other knick-knacks, and this provides the basis for our storage design.
1 You'll need one set of canvas shoe storage pockets. You can make your own but to save valuable time we bought one which also means we can get on to the fun bit - decorating the pockets.
2 Using the pattern (see diagram), cut out six felt flaps for the pockets. Two of these will be yellow, one lime green and one purple. You will also need one red and one lime green flap with tabs. Fold each flap in half and stitch around the open sides. Cut around the ends of the flaps with pinking shears.
3 Each flap will need to be sewn on just above the pocket, but before you do so each will have a different kind of fastener attached. Instead of buying new fasteners, you could cut the buckles, straps, clasps or buttons off your unwanted clothes or bags. (We've used ribbon, an overall buckle and elastic, snap together buckle and nylon strap, plastic dog clip fastener and nylon strap, a D-ring, a small nylon strap and velcro).
4 For greater opening and closing variety on the pockets we used three snap fasteners, two buttons, a metal button, a zipper (along the top) and six eyelets together with show lace on another. 5 To really grab your child's attention we're going to attach the Teletubbies on four of the pockets. Copy from the outlines given in the book (see below for details). Trace Tinky Winky, Laa-Laa, Dipsy, and Po onto the paper side of the fusible webbing. Cut around each and iron onto the appropriate coloured felt (Teletubbies "fans" will be able to let you know which colour to use). A useful tip is to cut out their faces and tubby screens separately, as they are differing colours. Use a felt tip pen to draw in the finer features. Cut out carefully, peel the backing paper off and iron each into position.
The end result is a set of easy and colourful storage pockets that will entice the kids to put away those wayward toys.
