A few flowers can look more elegant and stylish than a huge bunch, in the right type of vase. Here we make a simple and modern flower stand.

1
Cut the timber into three lengths. One length should be at 600mm and the other two at 280mm each. Note that radiata pine can also be used as a cheaper alternative. The longer length will be used as a base to hold the flowers, supported off the ground or table top level by the two shorter side pieces.

2
Make the holes to hold the flower stems by marking out the hole positions in the longer piece of wood. Drill out the holes using a 20mm drill bit. (Mark the holes in a zig zag type pattern at about 100mm apart). Place a scrap piece of wood underneath as you drill to keep the underside free from wood splinters.

3
Drill the screw holes, using the 4mm bit, 10mm in from the end and 40mm in from each side. Place your uprights in position and pre-drill before gluing and screwing together. Finish with a light sand and varnish. Shot glasses (filled with water) can be positioned underneath to place the stems into, so that they will each have an individual water supply. Sometimes less really is more!
