Scatter cushions are a simple and cost effective way of changing the look of your couches, especially if you make them yourself. Fabric paint, coloured felt and fabric adhesive is basically all that is needed for you to transform that worn and dated cushion.
Remove the cushion insert. Wash, dry and iron the cover to remove any loose dirt and stains.
Brush the fabric paint onto the inner and outer border. While the borders are drying (allow half an hour) you can prepare the felt appliques.
Place your paper templates (hearts and circles) onto the felt and draw around them with a marker. Cut away excess felt but do not cut up to the marker lines. Remove the top paper from the Steam-a-Seam and place the felt shapes onto the sticky surface, pressing down firmly. Do not remove the underneath paper at this stage. Now cut around the felt shapes, cutting right into the marker line.
Once the painted borders are dry, remove the under paper from the Steam-a-Seam and stick the felt applique shapes onto the cushion cover. Lay a damp cloth over the shape and with your iron (set to cotton) press for about 10 seconds. Repeat this process until all the fusing is complete. This is a permanent process and there is no need for any sewing.
Use the charcoal fabric paint as an outline to highlight the appliqued edges and borders. Once the outline paint is dry, remove the inserted paper. Sew some beads onto the cushion cover for detail if desired. Next, replace the insert and you have a brand new scatter cushion.
