Bookends of Sorts
Here's an innovative way to decorate bookends, using licorice allsorts.

1
Cut a couple of licorice allsorts into smaller slices (showing a cross-section) and arrange them so they fit neatly on the top of both jar lids.

2
Using a brush, glue the licorice pieces into place with PVA glue. Allow to dry.

3
Give the allsorts a complete coat of varnish, making sure you cover them completely. This will prevent them from deteriorating. Allow to dry. Apply another couple of coats of varnish and allow to dry.

4
Give the bookends a light sanding. Then apply a coat of white undercoat/gesso and allow to dry.

5
Mark lines apart down the length of the bookends, spaced one centimetre apart. Paint one in a colour, leave the next white, then use a different colour and keep alternating.

6
The stripes that have been left white can then be painted black. This will create a licorice effect.

7
Paint the outside edges of the bookends black.

8
Apply two complete coats of varnish over the bookends.

9
Position one jar on each bookend. You can glue them in place if you prefer.

10
Fill jars with licorice allsorts and display on a bookshelf.

Other ideas for decorating bookends include filling some glasses with marbles or painting a small pot and planting a cactus in it.
