The way that the table is set at a dinner function can be as important as the food itself. Creative Chic is a Melbourne-based company that specialises in table settings and some of them are featured here.

Italian Table Setting

This is how to make a perfect setting for an Italian meal. Afterwards, these fresh ingredients can be used to cook with.

"Ingredients"

A bunch of celery
Small cherry tomatoes on a string (not loose)
4 large red tomatoes
Bunch of basil
Bunch of chives
3 whole garlic
4 lemons
Green sheet of paper

1
Find a suitable tablecloth for the setting. We use a sheer yellow and green check curtain.

2
Find a clear bowl for the centrepiece and place a vase inside it.

3
Place the celery in the vase and fill the bowl with basil, dill and garlic.

4
Hang the little red tomatoes on the string around the celery. The celery ends up looking like a tree, producing tomatoes.

5
Choose suitable crockery for the theme. We use bright green bowls on white plates, together with red napkins.

6
Set the glasses for the water and the wine. To give the water a fresh lemon taste, hang a peeled lemon (in ring form) out of the side of the water glasses.

7
To make the name tags, place a whole tomato in each bowl and cut four leaf shapes out of the green paper. After writing the guests' names on them, insert partially into the tomatoes.

Kids' Table Setting

This table setting is only suitable for children over the age of three, as small objects can prove hazardous when swallowed. For this setting we use pirates, plastic sharks, palm trees, ocean creatures (fish, octopus, whales) and treasure boxes, etc.

1
Paint a large piece of cheap paper (butcher's paper) with blue waves to create the ocean. This will act as the tablecloth.

2
Use green tissue paper to create an island as the centrepiece. Raise the middle by scrunching it up.

3
Fill the island with pebbles and shells. Just scatter these loosely over the green tissue paper.

4
You can create little "stories" on the island for the kids to continue by the way you position the toys. For example:
 A pirate standing near a treasure chest tipped over and lots of shiny glass pebbles around it.
 A boat approaching the island with the captain on board, firing his gun and trying to steal the treasure on the island.
 An oasis in the middle of the island with palm trees, pebbles, etc.
 Other sailors sitting around the fire, warming up for the upcoming action.

5
Place lots of sea creatures on the water around the island.

6
Set white bowls for the dinner.

7
Each plastic shark is stuffed with a small coloured bottle with a note inside (to be viewed later).

8
Knife and forks are placed loosely in the drinking glasses, to look like rockets.

9
When the kids arrive for the party give them a pirate headband with a skeleton on it. If they eat all their food (including the vegetables) they are allowed to read the note in the bottles which will tell them where the real treasures are hidden. This will be a treasure box filled with chocolate "gold coins" and delicious "snakes".

Asian Table Setting

This simple setting has enormous style and chic.

1
Place bamboo sticks parallel on the table, as a centrepiece.

2
Place candles in between the bamboo sticks.

3
Position the bowls on square, natural fibre paper place mats.

4
The chopsticks can be placed casually in the bowls together with the napkins.

5
Write guest names on pebbles with a black felt pen and position them on red dried leaves on the place mats.

6
Cover four bowls with banana leaves and fill with natural spices and flavouring such as red chilli and lime. This is for the diners to season their food with.

7
Fill four small containers with infused chilli oil.

African Table Setting

The colours and textures make this place setting seem like you have just returned from safari.

1
Two runners of tribal influence are used to create the tablecloth.

2
Hessian bags filled with spices are used for the centrepiece. Position them amongst rambutans, tropical fruits and loose spices.

3
Use animal print napkins tied with amber beads and ivory.

4
Plates can be wooden or flat cane baskets lined with banana leaves.

5
Water glasses can be used with "zebra" striping added.

Girls' Lunch

For a relaxing lunch with the "girls", we create a mood which is soft, gentle and flattering.

1
Form a centrepiece out of roses. Use a vase containing ice cubes and frozen rose leaves and petals.

2
Fill champagne flutes with frozen pink daiquiris together with mint ice cubes.

3
Use pink and white napkins, tied with bows.

4
The tablecloth can be made from chintz.

5
Place white bowls on the plates and use lots of crystal and silver wear.

6
Name tags can be formed by using small picture frames containing your friends'portraits.
