There are many decorative candles on the market but they tend to be quite expensive. Use this simple foil technique to make ordinary candles more attractive.

1
Cut a piece of tracing paper the same height as, but about « cm wider than the candle (when wrapped around it).

2
Use a felt tip pen to draw a design onto the tracing paper. You can trace images from other fabric designs if you wish.

3
Wrap the tracing paper around the candle and hold in place with masking tape. Then go over the images with a ball-point pen. Press firmly enough to leave an indentation of the design on the candle. Once you have finished, remove the tracing paper from your candle.

4
Using a small brush, apply a thin coating of the foil adhesive onto the individual shapes in your candle design.

5
Cut a piece of foil the same size as the tracing paper. When the adhesive is tacky and almost dry, wrap the foil around the candle with the shiny side face up. Then rub the foil so that the gold transfers to where the adhesive is.

6
When you have finished, gently take off the foil. Left over gold leaf can be rubbed on to another candle with your fingernails to get a scratchy gold look. Depending on your designs, the gold foil will transform many candles.
