A memento plate is a lovely way to display your favourite photo of family or friends. Using a clear glass plate, a colour photocopy of your photo, and a little imagination, you can create a very personalised masterpiece.

1
Make a colour photocopy of your chosen photo. You can enlarge to a size that will cover the back of your glass plate. Position this photocopy against the plate and with the marker pen draw a line on the front of the plate approximately around the image. This line will indicate the boundary that you will gild up to. After gilding, the line will be wiped off. Tear away the excess edges of the photocopy as this will make it easier to glue down.

2
Using the brush, apply your gilding adhesive (Japan size) to the back of the plate all around, up to the marked line. Do not apply Japan size to the surface where the image will be seen as the gold leaf will stick to the glued (or sized) areas. Also apply Japan size to the round surface of the beads (to be stuck on as decoration later).

3
After about 20 minutes the size should be tacky to the touch. Wearing cotton gloves, carefully apply the gold leaf onto the sized areas of the plate, rubbing down as you go. Work around the plate and up to the marked line. You should end up with a rough gilded edge effect, leaving a clear space in the centre of the plate for your photo.

4
When you have finished gilding, clean off any excess size and the line marking with a cotton ball dipped in turps. Give the gilded surface a good rub to remove any loose bits of gold leaf. Gold leaf is applied to the beads in the same way.

5
Now brush a generous amount of PVA glue onto the front or image side of the photocopy, brushing up to the edges. Place the photocopy onto the back of the gilded plate and adjust into position. Press firmly to remove air bubbles and clean excess glue up with your damp cloth. The image will look white and cloudy through the glass at this stage but will become clear as the glue dries (around 30 minutes).

6
Next glue the gilded beads onto the front of the plate for decoration and apply letters to the plate as required (eg. name, date, place of wedding, etc). A light coating of varnish will prevent the lettering from being rubbed off in use. You can display the plate on a stand (bought at a gift store) if you so wish to maximise the effect. This makes a great gift idea, especially with Christmas approaching!
