Ribbon Footstool
Here's a great way to decorate a footstool.

1
Measure around all four sides of the lower edge of the footstool to calculate the amount of woven braiding required. Our footstool had been upholstered, so before we started we had to remove the studs around the sides.

2
Start by cutting a piece of double-sided interfacing to the same size as the top of the footstool. Lay it on the footstool, paper-side up and iron into place. Then remove the paper backing. The interfacing will stabilise the ribbons and prevent them from shifting. You could also cut the interfacing into lengths stretching from the edge of the underside over the top and down the other side. Leave a 5cm excess to turn each end under before securing.

3
Before you start working with the ribbons, wrap a little sticky tape around the end of the ribbon to make it easy to thread and to stop it from fraying. Stretch one ribbon across the centre of the footstool, and staple both ends to the wooden frame underneath. Cut off the excess. Next, fasten the second piece of ribbon perpendicular to the first, exactly in the centre.

4
Start weaving the other ribbons on either side of the centre, moving out towards the edges. Don't staple these until the weaving is complete; instead, keep secure with a pin.

5
When the entire surface of the footstool is covered, staple the ribbon ends to the wooden frame. Trim to neaten.

6
Remove the pins, lay a clean cloth over the woven surface and press it with a warm iron to fuse the ribbons in place on the footstool.

7
Glue the woven braid or fringing around the base of the footstool to cover the stapled ribbon ends.
