Hot-Water Bottle Animals
Make a hot-water bottle animal (we made a cat) to keep you warm on those cold winter nights.

1
Cut a rectangle of fur fabric so that it will fit loosely when wrapped around your hot-water bottle.

2
Make the cat's tail. First, make your own paper pattern by enlarging the shape in diagram A. Using the extra fur fabric, cut out two pieces of material for the cat's tail.

3
Pin the two pieces of tail right sides together and sew, leaving a 3/4cm seam allowance. Leave the top end (straight edge) open (see diagram B).

4
Trim the seam allowances and then turn the tail right side out through the seam opening.

5
Fill the tail with wadding. Cut the wadding into small strips and use a ruler (or something similar) to push the stuffing into the tail.

6
Take the rectangle of fur and fold it in half (right sides together) to fit around your hot-water bottle. Cut this rectangle out, making sure you allow for the seam.

7
Pin and sew down the long edge, leaving a seam allowance of 1.5cm (diagram C).

8
Lay the body so that the seam is running down the centre (diagram D).

9
Pin the tail on the inside of the body and sew along the top pinned edge (diagram E). Take it slowly, as the machine has to work through four layers of fur.

10
Turn the fur the right way out.

11
Snip 14 small holes around the top of the opening and reinforce the holes with a small amount of clear nail polish (diagram F).

12
When the nail polish has dried, thread some nylon cord (3-4mm wide) through the holes. Fasten the cord with a drawstring toggle (seamed side).

13
Attach snap-on kid-safe eyes between the cord and the edge of the fur. (Kid-safe eyes won't come off easily.) Make a small hole in the fabric, thread the eye through and snap at the back.

14
For final touches, attach a bell and ribbon around the cat's collar.
