Our House looks at ways to immortalise children's paintings, which usually end up being plastered all over the fridge. But, as you know, only so many can fit!
As an alternative to stashing kids' masterpieces in a box, Rebecca shows three craft projects that will help show off your childrens' talents. First up, a special medium stitchless, washable fabric glue allows the transfer of colour laser-copied designs onto light-coloured fabric, such as that used for bedlinen.
Quilt cover & cushions 1 Prewash fabric and iron to remove all wrinkles.
2 Using the sponge, apply a generous amount of stitchless glue to the image side of the copy. Be sure to cover from edge to edge. Apply extra glue along edge and corners.
3 Place glue-side down on the fabric and use a roller to press the copy to the fabric and to remove excess glue from under the paint.
4 Use a damp clean Chux to immediately wipe away any excess glue.
5 Allow fabric to dry for six to 12 hours.
6 Heat set by pressing each side for ten seconds with a dry iron to improve the transfer bond. Allow to cool.
7 To remove the backing, brush water over the paper and let it soak in for five minutes. When it's soft, use a sponge or your fingers to "roll" away the paper. Keep the paper moist by dunking the sponge or your fingers in water, and contine rolling away the paper. Do not rub! Continue the process until the surface looks clean and smooth.
8 Rinse the fabric in cold water to remove all paper particles. Do not wring, but dry out the fabric on the line.
9 To tidy the edges, trim with a contrasting colour ribbon, which can be applied using the stitchless glue. Alternatively, you could also use dimensional fabric paint to decorate the edges.
Lampshade 1 Cut the drawings or sections of the drawing so that the fit within the area of the lampshade. 2 Work out how you would like to place the drawings onto the lampshade. 3 Lay newspaper out on your work area. Brush PVA glue onto the back of each drawing, one at a time, and attach onto lampshade. Continue until the shade is completely covered. 4 Leave glue to dry for 24 hours, and trim if required. 5 Finish by spraying clear satin finish over the drawings. This will help give a protective coating to the shade.
Floor Mat 1 Work out the layout of the drawings onto the canvas. Allow for a 2cm hem around all four sides (this will be turned over later). 2 One by one, brush PVA glue onto the back of each drawing and glue onto place on the canvas. Continue until all drawings have been applied. 3 Use a roller or a sponge to get rid of any air bubbles under the drawings. 4 Allow to dry for 24 hours. 5 Turn the edges of the canvas over to create a hem. For a simple shortcut, use a glue gun to glue the hem in place. Press along the edge with a ruler, to make sure the hems flatten out. Cut away any excess canvas in the corners. 6 Finish with six coats of liquid varnish, allowing to dry between coats. Apply the first coat in one single direction, then apply each subsequent coat in opposite directions. This way, you will ensure you don't miss anywhere and the paper will bind better to the canvas.
To clean the mat, simply wipe it with a clean, damp sponge.
