| Create A Plate |
| A different and fun approach to pottery-making Italian-style |

Susan Condon, the daughter of actor James Condon, runs Create A Plate from studios at Mosman and Blackwattle Bay. This fun business teaches students how to paint authentic Italian designs on ceramic pieces such as plates, jugs and vases.
All projects at Create A Plate are made from greenware. This is the name given to unfired, unglazed slip-cast moulded designs. It is very fragile before firing and requires careful handling. Below is a description of the plate-decorating process. See further information for classes.
1 The design is hand drawn with a pencil onto the greenware plate. Pencil markings will disappear at the firing stages. Designs are available for the inexperienced, or you can simply create your own.
2 Using a water-based paint or underglaze, the design is painted in. Sometimes several coats are needed to achieve the desired effect.
3 A sponge brush is used to paint the rim of the plate, rotating it on a turntable as you go.
4 The technique of "sgraffito" is then used to etch or scratch into the design, to give an added dimension to the finished look.
5 The plate is then fired in the kiln and a clear glaze applied. It is then fired again to give the final result.
