Responding to a viewer's letter, we're going to build a tapestry stand, one that would normally retail for around $300, for the princely sum of $50. This stand is also ideal for ribbon embroidery, long stitch, cross-stitch, etc.

1
Mark out the positions for the uprights about halfway along the feet, then taper off the edges, having first cut all the timber to size (diagram 1).

2
With the uprights use a halving joint (diagrams 1, 2 , 3).

3
Drill some holes in the uprights for the bottom rail and so that the frame can be adjusted (diagrams 4, 5).

4
Glue and assemble the bottom half.

5
For the bottom rail, use roofing bolts with wing nuts so that the frame can be pulled apart and easily stored (diagram 6).

6
A couple of holes are drilled at either end for the dowels so you vary the size of the frame (diagram 7).

7
Sawing a slit through each end will allow the clamping bolt to be tightened, holding the dowels in place. Drill a mounting hole through the middle of each arm and fit the timber spacer (diagram 8).

8
Staple some upholstery webbing into each dowel (diagram 9).

9
Attach the frame to the stand. The wing nuts will allow you to adjust the angle of the frame (diagram 10).

10
Finish it off with two or three coats of Danish oil (diagram 11).
